I love the inspiration that Morgan brought back from Italy with her (this girl is a bit jealous!).  Check out what she has to say about this awesome retailer:

Buon giorno a tutti! {Good morning everyone!}

Ok, that’s just about the extent of my Italian – other than “Dov’è il bagno?” (where is the bathroom?), “Vorrei un cappuccino” (I’d like a cappuccino) and “Mi dispiace. Non parlo italiano.” (I’m sorry. I don’t speak italian).

Mi dispache, but I just got back from an amazing trip to northern Italy and haven’t quite accepted that I’m back to my normal life yet. I have this strong urge to bake bread, learn how to make my own pasta, and make my wardrobe more euro chic (especially since part of the trip included a conference attended by people from 35 countries). The bread baking happened yesterday (total tangent, but this book is AMAZING!) and the pasta will need to wait, but the wardrobe changes might be easier than I thought.

If you’re not already familiar, let me introduce you to Zara. Zara is a clothing and accessories retailer that began in 1975 in a central street in downtown A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. You can now find them in over 70 countries. While they have an online store that can be viewed in 10 languages, it wasn’t until 2011 that the US was one of the 17 countries where items could be shipped. I’ve never been to a store – and am trying to accept the fact that I was unknowingly two blocks away from one last week – but I’m already a huge fan just by browsing online.

Zara carries clothing for women (including a more youthful TRF line), men, and separate kids lines for young boys and girls (age 2-14) and baby boys and girls (age 3-26 months). You may notice that I included below examples of shoes and scarves for each group. If I had to overgeneralize what I saw in Italy, it was funky shoes and scarves, scarves, and scarves (even on kids and babies – so adorable). Oh, tons of chunky jewelry as well! The question doesn’t seem to be “if” you should wear a scarf or chunky jewelry, but rather what color and how many pieces.

If I wasn’t pregnant (unfortunately they don’t have a maternity line), I’d be going nuts with the shopping. For now I’ll just need to focus on shoes and scarves. But only for now…

My sweet Finley is the luckiest gal ever because her cousin Cadence was born just 5 weeks after her and lives only 10 minutes away!  My sister and I were so excited to find out we were both having girls only a few weeks apart.  Since we were still in newborn chaos ourselves when Cadence arrived, we split up her newborn session into two days.  That ended up working out well, because she was kinda being a diva on day one.  ;P  Check out sweet baby Cadence and her adoring parents!

I just LOVE this ensemble put together by Jennifer of Minor Impressions Photography for families with teens!! It can be a struggle to get those teens to wear what you suggest they wear, but Jennifer offers some great tips! Here’s what she has to say:

Here in Texas, the outrageous heat is gradually making its exit, and we are starting to see a little bit of fall-like weather. For me, this always means that clients start calling to schedule their family session before the holidays get near. While us Wardrobe Wednesday ladies have been giving everyone advice for almost two years now, it can still seem so overwhelming to put together your entire family’s wardrobe, and  you can’t help but tinker with the idea of just doing one solid color. Add in a few older kiddos who are already highly opinionated with what they want to wear, and I’m sure you’re already stressed just thinking about it. That is why I chose to put together an ensemble consisting of mom, dad, and the possibility of a few hard-headed kiddos.

My first piece of advice is to decide which kid will be the most challenging when choosing his/her outfit. (I highly recommend that you don’t tell him/her why you chose them first!)  Once you’ve got the most difficult selection out of the way, start building everyone else’s outfits to complement it. If the first outfit you choose has a pattern with different colors, then choose solids to balance it all out. If it is one solid color, then the next outfit you select should have a few more colors, one being complementary to the first selection.

When teenagers are involved, keep in mind that your biggest challenge might not be about the colors, but rather the comfort, specifically theirs. While one daughter might love being in a dress every day, the other may be all about her jeans. You will have a lot less resistance if they can relax in their attire and allow their personalities to show a little while still trying to keep with a similar theme.

In the example below, I started my collection with, the more reserved, Girl # 2’s shirt. After adding Girl # 1’s dress, I was able to piece together the remaining outfits.

Kelly Valeri of Kelly V. Photography has put together an AWESOME family holiday wardrobe this week! Check out her shopping secrets and the adorable outfits she compiled this week.

I’m all about unique clothing finds — especially when it comes to dressing for a portrait session. And living in a mostly rural area without too many shopping options, I rely on online retailers quite a bit. So I was really excited to find out about Zulily.com. Anyone can sign up, and it delivers a daily e-mail to your inbox with deals for moms, babies and kids. All at incredible savings!

Sure, sometimes I just don’t have time and they get ignored or deleted. But when I’m looking for something a little different, Zulily is the place to go! It has introduced me to all sorts of retailers I never knew existed.

So for this week’s Wardrobe Wednesday, I thought I’d share my shopping secret with you and feature a few clothing finds from today’s daily deal! And if you sign up, you can get them, too.

One of today’s shopping “events” as Zulili calls them, is from Bouton Kids. When I checked out their website, I realized everything is hand-woven. Some of it is a little eclectic for my taste, but I loved some of the patterns and styles. I found two great pieces on the Zulili sale that made for a great starting point for outfits for a family session.

Even better? Zulili is featuring the skirt for $44 ($76 on the store’s website) and the shirt for $37 ($64 at the store). Great deals, huh?

To round out the rest of the outfits, I opted for a little pop of color with red, which is perfect for fall.

Yes, fall is right around the corner!  Shannon of Shannon J. Dodge Photography gets a jump start on the fall weather for us below:

That fall chill is in the air…or so I hear. Here in southwest Florida, it doesn’t cool off until at least mid-October. However, my clients still prefer to dress for the season and I don’t blame them! I know when I have my family portraits taken later this fall, we’ll be dressing the part, whether it’s 90 degrees or not! Last week, I asked our awesome Wardrobe Wednesday fans what they’d like to see this week. The majority of you said you’d like to see more boy ideas and fall suggestions. So guess what? I combined the two. And because I am the queen of one stop shopping, I am featuring clothing from Tea Collection. LOVE.THEM.SO.MUCH!  We have featured them once before. Click here to view that post.

As soon as I went to Tea Collection’s website, the warm fall colors were very apparent. Tea Collection always has a globally inspired collection, and this season it’s Modern Mexico. Let me tell you, it is CUTE. What I really love about Tea Collection, is that their pieces coordinate with one another, which makes layering (and putting together compilations for photo shoots!) pretty simple. Another feature I love, is that they have different features such as outfits, new arrivals and wardrobe sets. If you want an outfit already put together for you, just click on outfits and voila! There are so many things I love about Tea Collection; I could go on and on, but the number one feature is that their clothing is made to last. It does not fade easily, wrinkle much or fall apart. This is important to me because my kids are hard on clothing!

Check out their website for yourself. They often have SUPER sales, which is a nice bonus.

This week’s compilation was a cinch because of Tea Collection’s awesome coordinating items and themes. I chose to do a lot of layering, because it adds dimension and color to photos. The first boy’s outfit was already put together by Tea Collection. I LOVED how the henley was placed over the hoodie. The hoodie added just enough color to POP the outfit. I decided to show the items separately on the compilation board, but I added the picture of the outfit separately to show the look I am trying to depict. The second boy’s outfit was coordinated by me, myself and I. I saw the Ticking Stripe Pant (and had to have them for my son!) and went from there. I decided to coordinate another shirt over hoodie outfit to go w/ the pants. Fun to coordinate with the other boy but not too “matchy matchy”. For the mom, I found the scarf paired with the red v neck shirt and fell in LOVE. I just read recently that red is THE COLOR this season. And I don’t know many people who don’t look great in it!  Unfortunately, Tea Collection does not offer a men’s collection, so I kept it simple and left the father figure out.

Here are some images from a family I photographed in Ohio last year. This mom had the wardrobe DOWN! Layers, colors, and textures…oh my!

So there ya have it. I hope this post inspires many readers to check out the very awesome Tea Collection line and to layer for their fall portrait sessions!

CUTE CLOTHING ALERT!!! This week’s post by Rebecca of Rebecca Keeling Studios is just what Wardrobe Wednesday needed this week! I LOVE new suggestions for clothing. Especially when said clothing is extra cute and fun. Read ahead for more info!

I came home today to find one of my MOST favorite catalogs waiting for me in the mailbox.  I love it so much that I felt compelled to share it with you for this week’s Wardrobe Wednesday post.  Those of you with boys know how difficult it is to find really cute, original, and unique clothing for them.  While living in England, I was overly excited during an early shopping outing when I came across Next in a little town near our home.  There wasn’t a time that I went into that store and didn’t come out with an armful of bags for the whole family, especially Kade, who was about a year old at that time.  Not only were the clothes super cute and stylish, the prices were very reasonable {which is really hard to find in the UK} and extremely well made.  Much to my dismay, when I moved back to the US, I realized that they didn’t ship to the States.  And thus ended my love affair with Next.  You can imagine how over-the-moon I was when, just a few short months ago, I received a Next catalog in the mail and realized that they have changed their shipping policy and now even list their clothing in US sizes!!  Holy shopping spree, y’all!!  One of the many amazing things about being able to shop online with Next is that they are truly a one-stop-shop when it comes to all things apparel.  Babies, boys, girls, mom, dad…shoes, accessories, outerwear, special occasion, casual, dressy, sportswear…even maternity AND homeware…all with a fabulous British flair!!  They even offer $5 shipping.  Seriously.  Here are a few of my favorite collections found in their brand new fall catalog.  With holiday portraits and fall sessions just around the corner, you’ll be glad you now know all about Next.  Enjoy…and happy shopping!!

I love how Shannon of Shannon J. Dodge Photography gets back to the basics for this week’s stripped down theme.  Sometimes less IS more!

I am all about color or props in photographs. Bright colorful patterns on children OR coordinating with bright and colorful props can be wonderful. But sometimes I like things toned down a tad. It may boil down to preference or a matter of taste, but sometimes…less is more. As a lifestyle portrait photographer, I tend not to use too many props. I like to focus on the soul and emotion/interaction between my clients, rather than force a situation. Which brings me to this week’s post: whether you are photographing a baby, child or family, sometimes it’s best to leave most of the props behind, tone down the clothing, and focus on the individuals instead.

Some of my most favorite sessions recently have been those where the individuals i’ve photographed were just being themselves. I recently had the privilege of photographing the SUPER talented Jean and Travis Smith and their GORGEOUS boys. Jean told me ahead of time the vision she had for her session. She wanted lots of warm evening light, and photos of her family just being together. She decided she’d like some images in a grassy area with everybody dressed and then some by the water with her boys shirtless. All of her boys wore khakis and were barefoot. Jean wore a neutral colored maxi dress. The result? Pure joy and delightful images. Her boys were naturally comfortable and more likely to relax around me as a result.

Pssst…let me tell you a little secret. Sometimes the little ones need their comfort items with them–blanket, stuffed animal, doll. And you know what? Capturing them with their “lovies” is PRICELSS and clients LOVE IT!

I photographed this beautiful little guy last year. His mom wanted some of him tastefully naked. I love the result with this adorable crocheted hat!

His bedroom had the perfect white room with just the right amount of light. We placed him in his crib and voila. With gorgeous blue eyes like that, who needs anything else?

Here’s another example. Just a few weekends ago, I went to a client’s home to do a photoshoot with her children. I told her with the heat, humidity and bugs, that her children would most likely be most comfortable in their own home. I was in heaven when I arrived to their large and open home FULL of natural light. The kids were naturally active, as one and three year olds are, but I was able to relax them and get natural expressions by letting them do the things they like to do. The little girl wanted to read and hang out in her bedroom, so we did just that. I brought along some inexpensive blocks for the baby to play with, and he was very happy! It’s amazing what a book and some blocks can do. Keep that in mind when using props. In this case, less was more!

And one last example. This little girl loves dress up, so I knew this beautiful flower wreath would work perfectly for her. I was able to focus on JUST her and add a little bit of color and whimsy.

These are just some subtle ways to have fun and focus on the inner soul and personality of your clients. The compilation I put together is very simple and easy. All of the clothing items are from the Gap (keeping in line with my usual “one stop shopping”!). I am picturing the Dad’s jeans rolled up and everybody barefoot. Of course this would have to be a session shot in a warm climate, so it’s perfect for summertime! The props do not go along with the outfits I put together. They are just some ideas to add something a little extra special to your photoshoots. Take some time to relax and relax your client’s by letting them play and just “be”. You might be surprised at the results!

I am so in love with the beautiful colors and awesome details of this Wardrobe Wednesday post by Rebecca of Rebecca Keeling Studios.  I’ll let her explain where the inspiration came from!

“Recently I asked our Wardrobe Wednesday fans to give me some ideas about what they’d like to see in my upcoming post, and my question was answered with “vintage” and “retro” and “not costumey” and “family.”  I thought, well, that sounds right up my alley!  I am so in love with all things vintage and retro…and absolutely love all of the stylized sessions I am seeing lately…so I said to myself, why don’t we put them together?  When I have my pre-session consultations with clients, I always give them lots of ideas on props to bring to make their session unique and different.  I know this can seem a bit overwhelming to some clients, but I am here today to tell you, it is super easy!  It just takes a little bit of creativity and a bunch of Googling, and there you are!  Since we are obviously in the throws of summer, I wanted to do something with a summer-inspired theme, and what could be more “summer-y” than lemonade?  I started on Etsy and typed in “lemonade” and within about 30 minutes, I had found a dress for the little girl, a flag banner, cute little straws, and the cupcake decorating set.  The dress and straws I found first, so that set my color palette.  From there, I started imagining things that would look cute (and also be functional) for a family session.  Then I headed over to Google, and typed in “vintage soda”, “metal drink tub”, and “pink and green candy.”  It was really that easy!  In about an hour, I had found just about everything I needed for my stylized session.

Before every session, I always take some time to imagine different scenarios that I might want to try with my clients.  That way, I’m not stuck for ideas if they don’t magically pop into my head on site.  For this session, I imagined a field of green grass, maybe some little wildflowers (if we were lucky), a lovely tree to hang our flag banner, and my family sitting on a beautiful quilt, surrounded by all things pink, green, and yellow.  Cute little cupcakes (that you can bake yourself) topped with the items from the decorating set on a lovely plate…being eaten and enjoyed during the session…maybe even with a little icing fun!  Pink soda pop chilling in a bright green metal tub and kids eating candy from the Mason jars.  There are so many possibilities with this set up, I could just go on and on!”

The wardrobe was inspired by the little girl’s dress and the fact that I knew I wanted something a little bit vintage for Mom.  Luckily, I already knew about ModCloth and their fabulous vintage clothing, so I went there directly.  I already had my color palette from my props, and since my theme was lemonade-inspired, I quickly scanned through the dresses for something yellow.  After finding Mom’s dress, I picked a pop of color for her shoes, and a bit of a retro feel with the owl ring.  The boys were fairly easy; I just pulled colors from the outfits I had picked already!  Bare feet for kids during the summer is my absolute favorite, so we didn’t even have to stress over choosing shoes.  And that’s it!  A stylized session pulled together in a matter of hours.  You can do it too…it really is amazing what you can find on Etsy and Google!  The important thing is to have FUN and enjoy the process…and remember, there are no limits to your imagination. :)

With the temperatures still over 100 and not going down anytime soon, this is a great idea for a fun family session!  Morgan of Morgan Dawson Photography did a fantastic job with this week’s theme!

“Today it’s about comfort, and realistic summer fashion.

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to live in a place where I could literally swim every single day in the summer. My wardrobe consisted of bathing suit + something over it + flip-flops or sandals. Not a bad way to spend the summer, right? When I return to the lake, I pretty much go right back to my usual routine – and love every second of it.

This is how I spend my summer. This is how I’d want to remember the summer.

I decided to put together a family wardrobe that could be worn by – or even IN – the water. Be it a lake, pool, ocean — wherever! If it’s hot, no-one wants to stand and pose for photos on a warm, sunny day. Why fight it?

Document the way you really live this summer. Maybe you’re sitting by the edge of the pool playing with your kids. Maybe you’re walking along the beach or skipping stones in a lake. The best family portraits are the ones that capture how you truly spent your summers – not some invented scenario.

Now, don’t get me wrong. You may be able to grab the family and get some shots together, but if the kids get itchin’ for a jump in the water – go for it. My advice – don’t wear anything that can’t get wet…just in case someone gets pushed in:-)

Happy summer!

Somehow I totally missed this post from Jenn at Minor Impressions Photography.  I’m so bummed because it’s all about the boys and was nicely timed for Father’s Day.  Oops!  Be sure to scroll down and see the adorable photos of little (and big) guys in the cutest ties by Trendy Ties!

“Father’s Day is this coming Sunday, so there’s no better time for us to focus on all of the men (and boys) in our lives! When giving advice on wardrobe compilations, we usually start out by having the outfits revolve around the little gals or moms. So, when there’s not a female involved in the session, it can be difficult for the guys to plan what to wear.

It’s best to keep it simple and introduce just a couple of basic coordinating colors. An easy way to do this is with plaid shirts or shorts. Be sure not to involve too many different plaids, otherwise it becomes too busy. With button-up shirts, you can roll up the sleeves, and leave it untucked to have it on the casual side, or tuck it in and add some accessories to dress it up.

One of the simplest ways to add a little class to your outfit without putting too much effort is by including a tie.  Who can resist a bare-bellied baby with some adorable polka dots, a handsome father with his precious newborn son, or a young man dressed to impress? Just add a tie to the basics you already own, and people will think you spent hours putting the outfits together! A great place I’ve found to purchase these ties with style is Trendy Ties. Not only do they have modern neckties and bowties, but they can also create hair flowers and brooches for sister and mom. You can check them out on Facebook or Etsy! She just completed a crazy sale, so she’s taking a short vacation, but be sure to visit her starting June 20!
