We had a post on our Wardrobe Wednesday Facebook page last week asking for advice on creating a wardrobe to go with Army Combat Uniforms.  We always appreciate requests for help, and we thought that this would make for a wonderful post!  We recruited the fabulous Rachel of Rachel Brenke Photography to help us out.  As a photographer and military wife, she has a very unique perspective.  Thank you Rachel for helping us out and sharing your thoughts with us!  Here’s what she has to say:

As a military spouse working intimately with clients who are going through deployments/homecomings is really emotion invoking.  The mindset getting ready for a homecoming or deployment session is completely different than one of family portraits that are done yearly.  There’s always the real possibility this may be their last, or at the very least is one of the things that will help the family get through the rough separation.  Being in a military community the majority of my clients are military, even if they prefer to shoot not in uniform.  My biggest goal with getting ready for a session, especially one that is during or before a deployment is to ensure that they have FUN because you are essentially taking up their limited together and want to make it more than a session. Make it a memory.  Of course the goal is for ALL Clients to feel this, but with military it just seems to have that air of privilege that you get to be the one to document.

I chose the colors for the styled outfits because they are reminiscent of the yellow and blues that are often associated with the united states military and flag.  I avoided red’s as red is not flattering on most individuals. The use of cooler tones tied in this patriotic theme but also lent to be flattering for most body types and skin tones.

It’s hard enough trying to figure out how to dress a family of four – but what about a family of eight?! The easy out would be to dress everyone in the same colors, but don’t worry – a coordinated clothing ensemble is easier to pull together than you think. Here, Jennifer shows just how to do it!

Here’s what she has to say:

Last week, we had a special request from a mom who has a photo session with FIVE boys, one girl, and a hubby to round out a happy family of eight. It’s not an easy task to put together a wardrobe with so many kiddos, so we thought we would try to help. As I commonly like to suggest, I started with the 11-year-old daughter, and gave her an outfit with multiple colors with which to coordinate. Following the blues and yellows scheme, I added in five boy shirts choosing a different color for each. With all of these shirts, the boys can wear either khakis or blue jeans. Mix in a couple of outfits for mom and dad, and you have a family that makes mom look like she has everything under control!

It’s not easy to always find everything in one store, so the best advice I can give in this situation is to go for colors that are trending for the season. Follow that rule, and you should have multiple choices at various stores.

I love these gorgeous spring looks that  Erica has compiled for your spring senior session.  Here’s what she has to say:

A few weeks ago we featured some new senior fashions for guys, so I decided we needed to highlight some of the new senior fashions for girls too! April is my busiest month for seniors and I love all the spring looks! Whenever I need some new ideas for senior fashion, I love browsing through the latest Lookbook from Ruche.  Ruche is one of my favorite fashion stores for young women. They have so many awesome outfits, dresses, shoes, jewelry, and more! Their vintage style is so in right now, and their patterns and textures are unique and fun. I am a fan of one-stop shopping, so all of the outfits seen below come from Ruche. Don’t forget the accessories – they have some awesome headbands and jewelry, too!

In my opinion, the best advice always comes from someone who has personal experience to draw from. So who better to give maternity clothing suggestions than Morgan who is certainly counting the days until her due date? Even better, she knows women don’t want to spend a fortune on maternity clothes, so she gives tips on how to punch up the basics you probably already have for your portrait session. Because, lets face it, you already have the best accessory possible — that gorgeous baby bump.

Here’s what she has to say:

Since I’m about three weeks away from my due date, I decided to revisit the “Build on your Basics” theme with a focus on maternity style. I’ve definitely tried to buy as few maternity-specific items as possible, preferring to stick with some core items and adding versatile pieces around them. Often this is done with existing items from your normal wardrobe, but if you want to buy something new, remember that being 8+ months preggo doesn’t mean you need to shop exclusively in the maternity section.

But first – your maternity wardrobe building blocks.

I think it’s always best to start with a great pair of dark-wash jeans. My personal favorite (I’ve bought several pairs of the same jean) come surprisingly from H&M (who knew they had a maternity line?). What I love is that they have belt loops and a finished waistband, making them look very much like normal jeans. You can also find a skinny version of these jeans, but both will usually tuck nicely into tall boots.

While I’m often wearing a black tank, for a photo shoot you’ll want to avoid black since the purpose of the session is to show off your bump – not hide it. Gap makes some fantastic layering tanks, but a good solid scoop or v-neck (you may be rockin’ some nice cleavage about now, so why not make use of it) will be a perfect base. Since you may be wearing pants with a panel, you need to be sure you don’t see the line or color of the panel through the white shirt. If you do, maybe throw on an extra tank underneath.

Now, let’s add to this.

Wraps, cardigans, and jackets are all pieces you can pull from your pre-pregnancy wardrobe. Sure, you probably can’t button your jacket anymore, but you don’t need to! If you want a little more shape to your look, add a skinny belt either over a wrap or under the jacket (always just under your bust). Bring color and texture to your outfit with scarfs, and don’t forget to add jewelry!

One last option – a blanket or throw. If you’re outside for your shoot and don’t want to wear a bulky jacket (or perhaps you’re like me and only purchased one all-purpose maternity jacket — nothing so special you’d want to wear in a maternity session), grab a coordinating blanket and wrap yourself up in it. It also works well when your partner is in the photo with you, as you can both wrap up in it together.

Before pregnancy, I dreaded what I would wear. But the options are much more diverse and enjoyable than I expected!

This week I decided to focus on an often overlooked group: the senior guys. Just because killer senior portraits aren’t always on the top of their to-do list doesn’t mean that they don’t want to look great too. I’ve pulled a few different looks together for guys of all types using many of our tried and true guidelines – textures, layers, and of course, an accessory too.

The first look is a classic casual outfit – jeans with a plaid button up, with either a cool jacket or sweater layered over top.  I think an outfit like this would suit almost anyone and almost any location too, it’s very versatile. The second outfit is the GQ look. J  I’m still waiting for a senior to come with a GQ wardrobe (hint, hint, guys!), but for the right guy it would really make the images stand out.  I can easily see a look like this paired in a modern or more industrial urban environment. The last look is for all of the hipsters out there.  I fell in love with the varsity-style cardigan, but really liked the look of the whole outfit.  Add a fedora for an extra touch!  I think this outfit would look great in an older vintage downtown area or a great coffee shop or cozy book store.  SHOPPING TIP: If you find an article of clothing that you love online, make sure to check out the different images available – retailers often show a full ensemble using the piece (like the cardigan) and it may give you ideas on putting together the rest of your outfit.

Wardrobe Wednesday this week is brought to us by Jennifer of Minor Impressions Photography! What a cute concept she’s put together, featuring coordinating outfits for sisters!

Jennifer says:

I have two daughters who are fortunate enough to have the sweetest relationship with their best pal. We get together with them often and try to take as many pictures as possible. My oldest daughter has known her closest friend since she was two and they’ve been the best of friends for the past five years. It’s been so much fun capturing their bond over the years. The thought of their friendship inspired me for this week’s Wardrobe Wednesday.

How fun would it be for your daughter to have a photo session with her closest friend or friends! I know it’s tempting to put your girls in matching outfits, but this is an opportunity to show everyone how much they are alike while also letting their unique traits show through. While often overpriced (unless you use one of their frequently-offered 40% off coupons), Justice is a perfect place to find some outfits for your fun-loving gals. They always have vibrant, trendy pieces to coordinate and an abundance of fashionable accessories that can add to the session.

Having pictures done with a friend will allow your daughter to relax and show her true personality. The addition of accessories will give them some props to have fun with and talk about. Some of the best images are the candid shots of your girls telling secrets or comparing bracelets. They can be sassy with their hat and stylish with their purses. Add a “Best Friend” necklace and the smile they have on their face while trying to piece it together will be a priceless image to cherish for years.

Loving this week’s compilation from Erica of Erica May Photography!  I must admit, I’m a bit of a neutrals girl myself.  Check it out:

I love compilations with lots of color but I know that is not always for everyone. Lately, I have been loving photoshoots with lots of texture and layers and more of a monochromatic theme. No, I don’t mean everyone wears a tan t-shirt but monochromatic can be done and done right! This week I chose brown as my starting color. Brown is probably one of the easiest colors to go monochromatic. All of the shades of brown look wonderful together and different textures are easy to find.  This toned down outfit scheme would have the viewer oohing and awwing over the “soft”, “vintage” and “muted” feel. Also, this would be a great staring point if you did want to add in a little color. A few pops of a burgundy in there would spice up the whole feel. A few accessories like these awesome hand-made leather headpieces or a vintage newsboy hat (there are a ton of these listed on Etsy) will give the kids an individualized look for their solo portraits. Enjoy!

Aren’t those leather headpieces gorgeous?? Julia over at Leather Blossoms has graciously offered a 5% discount off anything in her shop for our readers! I absolutely love her beautiful headpieces! Go check her out!

This week we are proud to welcome Leslie from Seniorologie as a guest contributor to Wardrobe Wednesday. If you have not checked out Seniorologie you must run over there right now and check it out! It is an awesome resource for the Senior photographer and our senior clients. It is packed with tons of tips, ideas, and inspiration.  Check it out:

Here are a few awesome sets Leslie put together and some helpful tips from her!

“Mountain Charm – This holiday season is the perfect time to cozy up with your family near a warm fireplace.  And what better way to hang out together, than in comfy, cozy clothes.  Family photos don’t always have to be dressy for those holiday photos.  Why not get your photos made in a casual wardrobe that is perfect for this chilly weather?

Cable knit sweaters, fur vests and boots all add texture and layers to your wardrobe for photos.  I picked these outfits based on the mom’s patterned sweater and colored blue jeans.  This set the tone for the others’ ensembles.  Once I had her outfit picked, it was easy to coordinate but not match the other outfits.  The little girl’s shirt picks up the rust color from the mom’s sweater and the blue from her jeans.  The little boy’s flannel shirt is a perfect mixture of the same colors without perfectly matching them.  Then to finish, I kept the Dad’s outfit simple and casual with beiges and browns.  All together they make the perfect family wardrobe.  And I can envision the perfect family photo on the porch of a beautiful mountain retreat!”

“For the past few years, I have sent out Christmas cards that are not your typical red and green!  I love the options out there now with fun colors such as yellow and turquoise.  They just happen to be two of my favorite colors so I love to incorporate them into mine and my families wardrobes whenever possible.

I know the holidays are upon us and most of you have already gotten your cards out.  But if there are a few still looking for inspiration (maybe even for a photo for a Happy New Year card), think about pairing non-traditional colors to make a fun wardrobe for your entire family.

For this grouping, I started with the little girl’s dress.  I loved that it was so bright and fun.  I used the colors in the dress to coordinate with the mom’s turquoise dress.  After that, I thought about the men and decided to go a little more muted on their color scheme.  The gray worked as a perfect accent to the bold colors from the girls outfits.  After this was all put together, I did a little card shopping and found these awesome cards that just so happen to go with this color scheme.  The best thing about them, is that they really could be sent out any time of the year!”

“Every New Year’s I have high hopes of going to a fancy, dressy New Year’s Eve party and I fantasize about the beautiful clothes I am going to wear to ring in the New Year.  However, I always end up in my jammies and asleep before the ball drops!  What a party pooper!

But don’t let my normal attire of jammies deter you from dressing up and going out on the town!  With the beautiful outfits I picked below, I almost want to throw my own party just to wear this sequin romper!!

The trick with dressing for New Year’s is to be festive but also comfortable.  Let’s face it…it is a long night!  So when I stumbled upon this sequin romper from French Connection, I knew it was the perfect thing!  I chose the black one but it also comes in a bronze color.  Both are fabulous.  Pair it with tights, booties and some fun earrings and you are set!

For your date, it is best that he coordinate but not match.  So I picked a purple check shirt to add some color to this duo and paired it with some charcoal pants and tie!  If it is cold, you can always add a blazer and scarf!

Happy New Year!”

Thank you so much Leslie! We were honored to have you! Make sure to run over and check out the Seniorologie page and like them on Facebook too!

Wardrobe is such an important aspect of your overall portrait experience, but putting together the type of wardrobe you want can often become expensive quickly!  This is especially the case for seniors who might be more fashion-conscious than the average consumer.  Well, don’t fear, you can put together several great and stylish outfits without breaking the bank!  I’ve compiled three looks from head to toe, accessories and all, for less than $175.  Better yet, substitute some of your own existing items (like boots or jeans) and save even more.

For the classic casual look, I’ve paired a great pair of boots with a beautiful sweater and belt combo.  Add in the scarf and knit hat or wear it on its own.  If it’s too cold to stick with short sleeves, you could easily throw on a long-sleeve shirt underneath for a nice layered look.  One thing I always recommend to my cool-weather seniors is to use a great jacket to expand your wardrobe.  Throwing on a jacket can give the appearance of a completely different outfit, especially when paired with some other cold weather accessories like a colorful scarf and hat.  For the dressier look, I went with a pretty seasonal sweater dress glammed up with some fun accessories like the feather headband and necklace.  Add the jacket on top for a few shots to change it up once again!

There are great deals to be found, especially this time of year!  You can get a steal at stores like Forever 21 and Wet Seal, especially on shoes and accessories, while you can grab your staples at a great price at stores like Target and Old Navy.  Happy shopping!SHOPPING LIST

Jennifer of Minor Impressions Photography keeps it simple with online shopping from Hanna Andersson and Target! Love this look…it’s perfect for Fall!!

It’s the time of year when everything I was planning to do six months ago has crept up on me, and panic is setting in as I realize it will be impossible to get it all done. I’ve begun to evaluate my priorities and while my own family pictures thankfully made the cut, I am finding I don’t have much time to plan our wardrobe.
Fortunately, I’ve collected multiple catalogs from some vendors I love and I came across my Hanna Andersson catalog which includes not only children’s clothing but outfits for mom and dad as well. I went straight to their website to pick out some things, and immediately clicked on the Family link that shows some great coordinated outfits. While it was very tempting to just purchase everything in the picture and check the task off my list, I only used this as a starting point. We have spoken many times about not putting everyone in the same color or making sure that all the kids aren’t in the same outfits. The same stands true for putting all family members in the same pattern or fabric. While I loved that Hanna Andersson offered a cardigan for mom and a vest and button-down shirt for the boy that could have completely matched the ensemble, I felt it was necessary to add some solids in to break up the patterns. As an added bonus, mom and dad or brother and sister can take some pictures just the two of them and still look fantastically coordinated!
